Unemployment fell, but there is no turnaround yet
Registered unemployment fell by 40,000 to 2.955 million in October 2026, while the rate declined by 0.1 percentage points to 6.3 percent. After seasonal adjustment, however, unemployment increased by 4,000.
There were 44,000 more unemployed people than in October 2025. The Federal Employment Agency therefore describes the autumn improvement as weak. Individual opportunities still depend primarily on occupation, region, working hours and availability.
654,000 vacancies, but hiring demand remains weak
The Federal Employment Agency had 654,000 registered vacancies in October, 31,000 more than a year earlier. At the same time, the BA-X vacancy index fell by one point to 102.
Not every vacancy is registered with the Agency and not every listing matches a person's skills or location. Comparing several related types of work is more useful than relying on one national total.
IAB barometer at 100.1: a hopeful sign, not a boom
The IAB Labour Market Barometer rose by 0.3 points to 100.1, moving just above the neutral mark for the first time since the start of the year. Its employment component gained 0.6 points to 100.1, the strongest increase since the post-pandemic recovery.
Values above 100 indicate a positive three-month outlook, but IAB still sees stagnation rather than strong growth. Industrial weakness, structural change and demographic decline continue to weigh on the market.
Employment remains below last year's level
Destatis reported around 45.60 million employed residents in September 2026. The seasonally adjusted figure was almost unchanged from August but 211,000, or 0.5 percent, below September 2025.
Registered unemployment and ILO employment statistics use different definitions and cannot be directly subtracted. Together, however, they show a labour market without clear growth momentum.
Practical steps for jobseekers
Choose three suitable fields and search each with several terms. Someone with warehouse experience can also look for picking, dispatch, goods receipt or production logistics. Include reachable neighbouring towns and different working-time models.
Update your CV and profile with specific availability, driving licence, languages and relevant experience. For local assignments, a short personal message answering the questions of place, date and task is usually stronger than a generic template.
What clients and employers can improve
State the task, location, date, duration, working hours, pay or budget and required skills directly in the listing. For physical work, include weights, stairs and available equipment.
Before work starts, clarify whether the arrangement is employment, a mini-job, short-term employment or self-employment. easyJobDE enables contact; the parties remain responsible for correct registration, insurance, tax and legal classification.
A seven-day action plan
Day 1: define search terms and radius. Day 2: update CV and profile. Day 3: compare ten current offers. Day 4: send five targeted applications. Day 5: contact local businesses or clients. Day 6: follow up. Day 7: review recurring requirements.
If the same qualification is repeatedly missing, targeted training may help. It should be linked to real vacancies rather than chosen in isolation.
Conclusion
October brought a small fall in registered unemployment and a cautiously better outlook, but hiring demand and employment remain weak. It is too early to call a turnaround.
Jobseekers should widen search terms, compare local options, state availability clearly and respond quickly. Small local tasks can add opportunities, provided the legal arrangement is handled correctly.
