An apprenticeship can still start after September
Most German apprenticeships begin in August or September, but some places remain unfilled and companies continue recruiting. On 25 September 2026, the Federal Employment Agency again confirmed that a later start is possible. A current follow-up placement campaign is bringing together employment services, job centres, chambers and employers with people still seeking a place.
The Agency's national guidance also says careers advisers can place applicants after the regular start and that entry may still be possible until the end of the year. The individual result depends on the company, occupation, vocational school and responsible chamber.
A late start does not automatically mean a lost year
Starting in October, November or December does not necessarily require waiting until the next intake. The Federal Employment Agency states that missed vocational-school content can be caught up. Before signing, applicants should confirm the class, missed material and available support.
German chambers explain that a training contract can generally begin outside the usual date. The responsible IHK or HWK should be involved early so the contract term, school attendance and examination date fit together.
How to search effectively now
1. Filter the Federal Employment Agency's job search for apprenticeships and location. 2. Check IHK and HWK vacancy portals. 3. Ask careers guidance specifically about follow-up placement and last-minute openings. 4. Expand the radius and include related occupations. 5. Call companies directly when a listing is still live or the company regularly trains apprentices.
State clearly that you can start at short notice and are prepared to catch up on missed school content. Be specific, but do not promise a schedule that is unrealistic.
Prepare these documents
Keep a clear CV, recent school reports, placement certificates and a short occupation-specific cover letter ready. Current placement events advise applicants to bring meaningful application documents.
A long generic letter is less useful than three concrete points: Why this occupation? What relevant strength or experience do you offer? When can you start? Applicants without formal experience can mention reliability, school projects, practical interests and availability for a short placement.
Clarify these points before signing
Ask about the exact starting date, vocational school, training location, pay, probation and working hours. Confirm whether the late start affects training duration or the examination date. This should be coordinated with the responsible chamber, not decided by the company alone.
Also check the commute. A quickly available place is not sustainable if the company and school are difficult to reach. Minors additionally need the statutory initial medical examination before starting.
A 48-hour action plan
Today: choose one target occupation and two realistic alternatives, create search alerts and list at least ten suitable companies. Next: contact careers guidance and the relevant chamber, tailor documents, call employers and apply the same day. The following day: follow up politely and arrange an interview or short placement where possible.
Act quickly, but do not sign indiscriminately. Duties, supervision, pay, travel and vocational school still need to fit a multi-year training decision.
Conclusion
Current follow-up placement campaigns show that companies still fill apprenticeship places at the end of September. Speed now matters: check current vacancies, use official advice, contact employers directly and clarify school arrangements. A coordinated late start can prevent a lost year.
