14,400 people began an SHK apprenticeship in 2025

According to Germany's Federal Statistical Office, nearly 14,400 people signed a new apprenticeship contract in sanitary, heating and air-conditioning technology in 2025. This was 30.5% more than in 2015, when around 11,000 new contracts were recorded. The group mainly includes plant mechanics for sanitary, heating and air-conditioning systems, plus a smaller number of stove and air-heating builders.

Why prospects remain strong despite trainee growth

Around 278,000 people worked in SHK occupations in 2025, 4.1% more than in 2021. At the same time, 23.3% of workers were aged 55 to 64. Some of these experienced specialists are likely to leave working life over the next few years, so growing trainee numbers still face substantial replacement demand.

The business trend also indicates continuing demand. The number of larger firms with at least 20 employees rose by 38.9% between the first quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2026 to almost 4,100. Their turnover increased from just under €2.9 billion to about €5.9 billion over the same period.

What applicants should bring

Technical understanding, practical skills, careful work and reliability matter more than perfect school grades. The recognised dual apprenticeship for an SHK plant mechanic normally lasts three and a half years. A work placement is a useful way to experience the mix of workshop work, construction sites, customer service and modern heating technology.

Applications should name concrete experience, such as repairs, school placements, technical projects, tool use or an interest in heating and climate systems. A short call to the company can clarify whether an apprenticeship or an initial work placement is available.

Women remain heavily underrepresented

Women signed only 2.4% of new apprenticeship contracts in the SHK occupations covered in 2025, compared with 36.0% across all dual vocational groups. This does not indicate a lack of suitability; it shows that career choices remain highly divided. Interested students can use placements to compare companies, tasks and physical requirements directly.

Practical next steps

1. Search for both “SHK” and the full German occupation title “Anlagenmechaniker Sanitär Heizung Klima”. 2. Check the Federal Employment Agency, chambers of crafts and regional company websites. 3. Ask about a placement or entry qualification if no apprenticeship is advertised. 4. Compare location, vocational school, pay, retention prospects and driving-licence requirements. 5. Share personal documents only through trustworthy application channels.

Conclusion

The strong rise in new trainees does not mean the market is saturated. An ageing workforce, expanding businesses and demand for modern building technology continue to create opportunities. The statistics do not guarantee a place, but they give technically minded applicants a good reason to examine SHK careers closely.
